How CrowdGen works
CrowdGen is Appen's contributor platform. Its public onboarding describes three broad steps: apply and verify your experience, get matched to projects that fit your profile, and complete qualified project work.
The range of work can be wide because projects depend on the needs of Appen's customers. Some opportunities emphasize language or local-market knowledge. Others call for general data work, content review, coding, or deeper professional expertise. A project may require an assessment before a contributor can begin.
This variety can be useful, but it also means there is no single CrowdGen job description, rate, schedule, or availability promise that applies to every contributor.
How Shift differs
Shift is narrower about the format and broader about where expertise can come from.
The format is footage: eligible contributors wear recording equipment while performing approved work. The expertise can come from many physical industries, including construction, commercial cleaning, landscaping, automotive repair, electronics repair, maintenance, HVAC, electrical work, hospitality, food service, and other hands-on businesses.
Shift is business-only. Household chores performed inside houses or apartments are not eligible.
Shift pays up to $20/hour for footage. Contributors should not assume that applying guarantees acceptance, that every activity will qualify, or that a particular number of hours will be available.
Who should consider each platform?
CrowdGen may fit someone who wants a portfolio of online projects and has useful language, cultural, technical, research, or professional knowledge.
Shift may fit someone whose expertise is most obvious while watching the work itself: how a repair is diagnosed, how a tool is handled, how a commercial space is cleaned, how equipment is maintained, or how materials are prepared and installed.
Because the work formats are different, a qualified person could use both. CrowdGen can capture what someone knows through structured online tasks; Shift can capture what someone knows through physical action.
